Sunday September 11th we attended our first Uruguayan Futbol League match, which featured our local team Defensor Sporting Club (DSC) vs Centro Atletico Fenix (CAF), at our home stadium Estadio Luis Franzini.
Before talking about the game i'll take a quick moment to point out the date on which this game was played.
The Uruguayan's honored us back home with a moment of silence before the match.
I don't think i'm alone in feeling that over the last ten years the memory of 9/11 was overcast by politicking (from both parties but largely from the Neoconservatives) to restrict our liberties and use our tax dollars to basically torture the citizens of two countries (Afghanistan and Iraq) in an effort to kill some bad guys but also spread American imperialism to places that want us to get the F#$% out. Sadly we are still there today. I made sure that on 9/11/2011 I remembered where I was when the tragedy happened and how sad and tragic is really was. (Two of my best friends were with me in my dorm room, freshman year at VA Tech glued to the tv (Derek and Micah) In order to do this i had to block out memory of the Bush Administration and their dishonorable/unpatriotic sabotaging of this event for their own political purposes. For everyone affected by that day and its aftermath.... We won't ever forget.
Now back to Game Day in Montevideo
I couldn't wait to get to my first league match. Defensor Sporting came into the game a little bit out of form having lost the previous week to "classic team" Penarol. Unfortunately they were unable to fully find their form in this match but battled hard.

Note the Jersey underneath the team flag.. that's how i roll!
And we are off!!!
DSC takes the field and the crowd goes wild.. yes the crowd looks small because the stands that you can see in this picture were reserved for the away side Fenix. It's best to keep the fans seperated.
GO Defensor! yes they are in purple
is it a bird? is it a plane? nope just Aaron being WAY to into futbol!!!
The best looking Defensor fans around, if i do say so myself! I LOVE HER!
Kickoff!
Everyone was having a good time
A squirmish? a fight? cooler heads (aka refs, prevailed)
This is a section reserved for the hardcore fans (hinchas)!
obviously i was not alone in wearing a Defensor flag around my neck
Cafe! Cafe! Cafe! (cute old man selling coffee)
at 0-1 fans were growing restless
Down 0-1.. stoppage time gives us 3 extra minutes!
And in the end we could not score.
So all in all our first Defensor game was a success but we left the defeated side. Important to note however, Defensor is generally one of the top teams in the league, off to a bad start however. you can follow their results with this link.
and/or check out their official homepage
Now lets not go crazy and forget about Arsenal FC (my truest of teams, cover your ears Defensor.)
Arsenal blood runs though my own veins.
This past Saturday 9/10 we got our first league win of the year vs Wales' Swansea City
Though unconvincing at 1-0, the mad russian magician Andre Arshavin capitalizing off a mistake by the Swansea goalie, a win is a win no matter what the score.. 3 points to the Arsenal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BELOW: Wenger keeping in real letting the refs and his players no whats up! well done Boss!Andre! (i have his jersey by the way) puts home the wining goal! Captain and most awesome dude ever Robin van Persie, aka RVP, aka golden LEFT boot (i have his jersey too by the way) congratulates his boy!
till next time.. life the fubol life!
