The celebration put on in Montevideo to celebrate the 200 year anniversary of Uruguay's independence as its own country was simply put, remarkable. Montevideo is a city of 1.3 million, Uruguay a country of 3.4 million, and i'll be damned if there were not at the very least 750,000 people who flooded the streets for this event. It is something that I may never again see in this lifetime.
Jorge Drexler and band perform an amazing set as day becomes night. Drexler is an Uruguayan musician and actor. Here's something some of us Americans might know him from: In 2004 Drexler won the first ever Academy Award by an Uruguayan for composing the song 'Al Otro Lado del Rio' for the movie The Motorcycle Diaries.
Drexler's Discography includes:
La Luz Que Save Robar- 1992
Radar - 1994
Vaiven - 1996
Llueve - 1998
Frontera - 1999
Sea - 2001
Eco - 2004
Eco2 - 2005
12 Segundos de Oscuridad - 2006
La Edad del Cielo - 2007
Cara B - 2008
Uruguayans drinking yerba mate as always, enjoying the events on the stage from a distance.
We came prepared with our own yerba mate (tea)
Its not an event without a guy on stilts
For some the massive crowds in the streets were a bit too much so those with conveniently located apartments watched from above and showed their national pride.
This is a picture of a large tv screen they had up. It was the only way I could get a picture that would show how packed the crowd was. Naturally they did not let me walk on the stage to take a similar photo.
We finished off the night by watching the fireworks from our rooftop balcony. (pictures off balcony during day time in next post.)
I took about 5 minutes of video footage of the Jorge Drexel concert but the stupid blog site won't let me upload a file that large right now so eventually i'll try and post it to facebook.Next post....The Paraguay Trip.. coming soon, also need to get some pictures of the roof terrace on here.
